>Halle Berry, Tyler Perry Honored at NAACP Image Awards

Halle Berry, Tyler Perry, Denzel Washington, Ice Cube and LL Cool J were among the winners at the 42nd annual NAACP Image Awards Friday in Los Angeles.

Berry was recognized as best actress in a motion picture for her role in Frankie & Alice; Washington took best actor for The Book of Eli; LL Cool J was named outstanding actor in a drama series for CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles; and Ice Cube won best supporting actor for his work on TBS’ comedy series Are We There Yet?
For Colored Girls dominated the film categories with three prizes: outstanding motion picture, directing honors for Perry, and a supporting actress nod for Kimberly Elise. Frankie & Alice was named outstanding independent motion picture in addition to Barry’s acting award, and Samuel L. Jackson rounded out the major motion picture awards with a prize for best supporting actor for Sony Pictures Classics’ Mother and Child.
Perry also made his mark in TV categories, with an outstanding comedy series win for Tyler Perry’s House of Payne as well as best actor kudos to David Mann for TBS’ Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns. Other TV winners included: ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy for outstanding drama series; Desperate Housewives’ Vanessa Williams as best actress in a comedy series; Regina King of TNT’s Southland as outstanding actress in a drama series, Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara as supporting actress in a comedy series and Law & Order: Los Angeles’ Terrence Howard as supporting actor in a drama series.
Mary J. Blige, John Legend, the Roots, Usher, Fantasia and Willow Smith received were among the music winners.
Broadcast on Fox, the ceremony’s opening music number included a spoof of Charlie Sheen during which Wayne Brady sang “He is the new Rick James!” and showed a photo of Sheen with James’ bead-dreadlocks ‘do.
